Williams, Robin (21 July 1951–11 Aug. 2014), actor and comedian, was born Robin McLaurin Williams in Chicago to Ford Motor executive Robert Fitzgerald Williams and Laurie (McLaurin) Williams, a former model.

Williams was a lonely child. Two half-brothers, Robert and Laurin, were grown and out on their own. The family’s many moves meant Williams attended six schools in eight years. He was small, chubby, and bullied. When he was twelve, the family moved to a forty-room farmhouse in Bloomfield Hills, a tony suburb of Detroit, Michigan. Williams created characters for the toy soldiers in his basement and improvised sound effects in staging their battles, hoping to win his mother’s attention.
