Motley, Archibald John, Jr. (7 Oct. 1891–16 Jan. 1981), painter, was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, to Archibald J. Motley and Mary Huff Motley, who were Roman Catholic African Americans of Creole descent. At the time of his birth his father owned and operated a general merchandise store, and his mother taught school. Racial tensions led the family to move to Chicago when Archie, as he was known, was two. Settling his wife and children in the Englewood neighborhood on the South Side, then largely comprising European immigrants, his father became a Pullman porter....
