Johnson, Marsha P. (14 Aug. 1945—6 July 1992), gay and trans rights activist, was born Malcolm Michaels, Jr. to a working-class African American family in Elizabeth, New Jersey. She was the fifth of seven children born to Malcolm Michaels, Sr., an assembly line worker at General Motors, and Alberta Claiborne, a housekeeper. Anticipating the identity she would choose later in life, Marsha P. Johnson, she began wearing dresses at the age of five but stopped due to bullying and harassment by other children. She attended an African Methodist Episcopal Church and remained religious throughout her life. She had a deep personal interest and appreciation for Catholicism and the saints....
