Mossell, Gertrude Bustill (3 July 1855–21 Jan. 1948), journalist, was born Gertrude Emily Hicks Bustill in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The daughter of Charles Hicks Bustill, a plasterer, and Emily Robinson Bustill, she was influenced from the start by two prominent African American families who stressed the value of education and civic responsibility.
