Novak, Michael (9 Sept. 1933–17 Feb. 2017), public intellectual, Catholic theologian, and writer, was the oldest of five children born to Slovak-American parents, Michael John Novak, an insurance salesman, and Irene Louise Sakmar Novak, a stenographer, in Johnstown, Pennsylvania.
