Dixon, Joseph Moore (31 July 1867–22 May 1934), politician, was born in Snow Camp, North Carolina, the son of Hugh Woody Dixon, a farmer and small-scale manufacturer, and Flora Adaline Murchison. Snow Camp was a small Quaker, Republican enclave, dominated by Dixon’s intensely religious father and uncle. Dixon was educated in neighboring Quaker schools and at Earlham and Guilford colleges (A.B., 1889). His education provided him with a lifelong enthusiasm for history and biography and skill in debate and oratory....
