Simpson, Wallis Warfield (19 June 1896–24 April 1986), duchess of Windsor, was born at Blue Ridge Summit, Pennsylvania, the daughter of Teakle Wallis Warfield, a bank clerk, and Alice Montague. The Warfields and Montagues were both old, reputable Baltimore, Maryland, families, but the two families did not get along. Within five months of her birth, Wallis’s father died of tuberculosis, leaving her mother essentially penniless.
