Looking Glass (1823–1877), Nez Percé war chief and buffalo hunter, Nez Percé war chief and buffalo hunter, known as Allalimya Takanin, or Looking Glass the Younger, was born in the Wallowa country in the Northwest Territory, the son of Apash Wyakaikt, chief of the Nez Percé. His mother’s name is unknown. When his father, also known as Looking Glass the Elder, died, Allalimya Takanin removed the small, round trade mirror that his father had worn, placed it around his own neck, and thereafter called himself Looking Glass.
