Surratt, Mary (May/June? 1823–07 July 1865), conspirator in the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, conspirator in the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, was born Mary Elizabeth Jenkins in Prince Georges County, Maryland, the daughter of Archibald Jenkins and Elizabeth Ann Webster, farmers. Her father died in 1825, but her mother proved to be competent, increasing the family’s landholdings and managing them well. The Jenkins family was Episcopalian, but at age twelve Mary Elizabeth entered a Catholic school in Alexandria, Virginia, that was operated by the Sisters of Charity in connection with St. Mary’s Church. She attended the school for at least three years and converted to Catholicism. At her confirmation, she apparently chose to emulate the legendary St. Eugenia and subsequently often referred to herself as Mary Eugenia or Maria Eugenia....
