Massasoit (1600?–1661), leader of the Wampanoag Indians, who was also known as Great Chief, Woosamequin, Ousamequin, and Yellow Feather, was born near the site of Bristol, Rhode Island, and lived in Pokanoket near Motaup, or Mount Hope, near the southern end of the peninsula of Rhode Island. Nothing is known of his parents or his youth.
