James, Edwin (27 August 1797–28 October 1861), botanist and physician, was born in Weybridge, Vermont, the son of Daniel James, a farmer, and Mary Emmes. He entered Middlebury College, Middlebury, Vermont, in 1812, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in 1816.
