Castelnuovo-Tedesco, Mario (03 April 1895–16 March 1968), composer, was born in Florence, Italy, the son of Amedeo Castelnuovo-Tedesco, a prominent banker in Florence, and Noemi Senegaglia. His father was descended from Sephardic Jews who had emigrated from Spain to Italy in the fourteenth century. Young Mario developed a love of music from his mother, who became his first piano teacher, and as a preadolescent he enrolled as a piano major at the Cherubini Conservatory in Florence, where he was taught by a cousin, Eduardo del Valle de Paz.
