Smith, Buffalo Bob (27 November 1917–30 July 1998), television and radio performer, was born Robert Emil Schmidt in Buffalo, New York, the only child of Emil Schmidt, a carpenter, and Emma (Kuehn) Schmidt. Recognizing his musical talents, his parents sacrificed to provide him with private voice and piano training while he attended public schools. His first performances were at the organ of his Lutheran church. At age fifteen he joined the Hi‐Hatters, a trio that entertained at dances and weddings and occasionally on local radio programs.
