Ziegfeld, Florenz (21 March 1867–22 July 1932), theatrical producer, was born in Chicago, Illinois, the son of Florenz Ziegfeld, Sr., a music teacher and music school administrator, and Rosalie de Hez. He was christened in the Catholic church of his mother despite the protests of his Lutheran father. His father, the founder of the Chicago Musical College, wilted his children’s love of classical music through his austere studio discipline. Young Ziegfeld remembered being severely punished by his father for playing popular music on the piano. He also had a four-year-old’s memories of the destruction of the family home by the Chicago fire of 1871....
