Van Tuyl, Marian (16 October 1907–10 November 1987), dance educator, was born Marian Tubbs in Wacousta, Michigan, the daughter of Charles Tubbs, a Congregational minister, and Mary MacLaughlin, a member of the psychology faculty at the University of Michigan. After her father’s death in a canoeing accident she took the surname of her mother’s second husband, Frank Van Tuyl. From the time she was seven years old, Marian knew that dance was to be her career. She attended the University of Michigan, graduating with a B.A. in physical education, the only way at the time to get the training she needed to be a dance teacher....
