Gable, Clark (01 February 1901–16 November 1960), movie actor, was born William Clark Gable in Cadiz, Ohio, the only son of William H. Gable, an oil driller and farmer, and Adeline Hershelman. Ten months after his birth, his mother died. His father remarried in 1903, and Clark’s stepmother, Jennie Dunlap, introduced him to ideas of culture and gentility. In his maturity Gable was a big man who dominated a crowded room, but even at age fourteen he was six feet tall and weighed 150 pounds. He was not, however, good-looking: his ears were big and his front teeth widely spaced. Later, after his teeth were capped and then finally replaced with dentures and his broadened features reduced the appearance of his ears, he was considered the essence of masculine handsomeness....
