Maynor, Dorothy (3 Sept. 1910–19 Feb. 1996), soprano and music and arts educator, was born Dorothy Leigh Mainor in Norfolk, Virginia. The daughter of John T. Mainor, a minister of the African Methodist Episcopal Church, and Alice Jeffries Mainor, Dorothy grew up singing hymns and spirituals at home and in her father’s church choir. At age fourteen she began studying home economics in the preparatory division of the nearby Hampton Institute (later Hampton University) in Hampton, Virginia.
