Dolby, Ray (18 Jan. 1933–12 Sept. 2013), inventor, was born Ray Milton Dolby in Portland, Oregon, the son of Esther Eufemia and Earl Milton, himself an inventor. Dolby grew up in San Francisco. He was still in high school—at Sequioa High School in Northern California—when, at age sixteen, he was offered a job at Ampex by its founder Alex Poniatoff. Ampex was one of the premier makers of audio tape recorders and later developed the first video tape recorder. There Dolby had his first real opportunity to develop his knowledge of and interest in the behavior of tape, to go with his innate love for mechanics....
