Hanna, William (14 July 1910–22 March 2001), animated-cartoon director and producer, was born William Denby Hanna in Melrose, New Mexico, the son of William John Hanna, a construction superintendent for water and sewer systems, and Avice Joyce Denby. During Hanna's childhood, his father's work took the family—which included six daughters in addition to Hanna, the only son—to points throughout the West, including Baker, Oregon, Logan, Utah, and San Pedro, California, and other towns in the Los Angeles area. Hanna graduated from Compton High School in 1928 and entered Compton Junior College as a journalism major. He dropped out when the onset of the Great Depression left his family in difficult circumstances....
