Pyle, Howard (05 March 1853–09 November 1911), artist, writer, and teacher, was born in Wilmington, Delaware, the son of William Pyle, a leather manufacturer, and Margaret Churchman, an amateur writer. His Quaker ancestors came from England in the eighteenth century. Nurtured by his mother’s love of books, as a child Pyle read German folk tales, Robin Hood and King Arthur legends, and novels by Charles Dickens and William Makepeace Thackeray.
