Nast, Thomas (30 September 1840–07 December 1902), political cartoonist, was born in Landau, Bavaria (now Germany), the son of Thomas Nast, a musician, and Apellonia Apres. In 1846 the family immigrated to the United States, settling in New York City. There Nast displayed sufficient artistic talent and potential to merit studying under Theodore Kaufman, a fellow German émigré who specialized in painting historical scenes.
