Lange, Dorothea (25 May 1895–11 October 1965), photographer, was born Dorothea Margretta Nutzhorn in Hoboken, New Jersey, the daughter of Henry Nutzhorn, a lawyer, and Joanna (later Joan) Caroline Lange. When she was seven Dorothea contracted the polio that permanently damaged her right leg, leaving her with a lifelong limp. When she was twelve her father abandoned the family; his desertion and her disability helped to form her great capacity to identify with the outsider....
