Hogarth, Burne (25 Dec. 1911–28 Jan. 1996), cartoonist/illustrator and educator, was born Bernard Spinoza Ginsburg in Chicago, Illinois, the youngest child of Polish immigrants Max Ginsburg and Pauline Lerman. Growing up on Chicago’s Jewish West Side, Burne was encouraged in his early desire to draw by his furniture designer father, who gave him newspaper comics to copy. When he was twelve Max arranged for him to take Saturday morning classes for children at The Art Institute of Chicago, where the boy made much use of the institute’s libraries and galleries. By ...
