Porter, Katherine Anne (15 May 1890–18 September 1980), writer, was born Callie Russell Porter at Indian Creek, Texas, the daughter of Harrison Boone Porter and Mary Alice Jones, farmers. Following the death of her mother in 1892, the family lived with her paternal grandmother, Catherine Anne Porter, in Kyle, Texas. Porter’s strong-willed, resilient grandmother, known as “Aunt Cat,” was one of the most important persons in her life. She, too, however, died during Porter’s childhood, in 1901. Shortly afterward, Harrison Porter moved his family to San Antonio, where Callie and her older sister attended the Thomas School, a private girls’ school, for about a year. Her goal at the time was to become an actress, but she studied a range of basic subjects in addition to the dramatic arts....
