Van Doren, Mark (13 June 1894–10 December 1972), writer and professor of English, was born in Hope, Illinois, the son of Charles Lucius Van Doren, a country doctor and farmer, and Dora Ann Butz. Dr. Van Doren moved the family to Urbana, the seat of the University of Illinois, in 1900 in order to give his five sons better educational opportunities.
