Green, Anna Katharine (11 November 1846–11 April 1935), mystery writer, was born in Brooklyn, New York, the daughter of James Wilson Green, a lawyer, and Catharine Ann Whitney. At age six she began writing and aspired to be a poet, an appropriately “feminine” mode of authorship of which her father approved. Unlike her sister Sarah, who cared for Green after their mother died and remained unmarried in the patriarchal household most of her life, Green planned a professional writing career.
