Hearst, William Randolph (29 April 1863–14 August 1951), publisher, was born in San Francisco, California, the son of George Hearst, a mine developer and U.S. senator, and Phoebe Apperson Hearst. His mother was the sole guardian of cultured Victorianism in the family, and she took her only child on two art tours of Europe by the time he was sixteen. The boy became a connoisseur but also a rebel; because of raucous behavior he was asked to leave St. Paul’s School and Harvard College, which he attended from 1882 to 1885....
