Dana, Charles Anderson (08 August 1819–17 October 1897), newspaper editor, was born in Hinsdale, New Hampshire, the son of Anderson Dana, a farmer and small-time merchant, and Ann Dennison. Distantly related to the wealthy and prominent descendants of colonial settler Richard Dana, Charles Dana grew up keenly aware of his family’s diminished social status. Poverty and the repeated business failures of his father would have a profound effect on the development of Dana’s political ideology, leading him to attack wealth and privilege and to identify with the interests of the “producing classes.”...
