Dahlgren, Sarah Madeleine Vinton (13 July 1825–28 May 1898), author, was born in Gallipolis, Ohio, the daughter of Samuel Finley Vinton, a U.S. congressman, and Romaine Madeleine Bureau. Dahlgren was educated at Monsieur Picot’s boarding school in Philadelphia and the Convent of Visitation in Georgetown in the District of Columbia. She married Daniel C. Goddard in 1846; Goddard was a lawyer and an assistant secretary of the Interior Department. They had two children. After Goddard died in 1851, Dahlgren returned to her father’s house in Washington, D.C., and helped to support her family by writing and translating. In 1865 she married Rear Admiral ...
