Karl, Barry Dean (24 July 1927–7 July 2010), historian, was born in Jefferson County, Kentucky and raised in Louisville, the middle of three sons of businessman Aaron Karl and Anne Simons Karl. In his youth, he had maintained hopes of becoming a concert pianist but ultimately pursued a college education in the humanities.
