Shoemaker, Gene (28 April 1928–18 July 1997), geologist and planetary scientist, was born Eugene Merle Shoemaker in Los Angeles, California, to George Estel Shoemaker, teacher, farmer, trucker, and studio grip, and Muriel May Scott Shoemaker, schoolteacher. Gene spent his early years in Buffalo, New York, during the school year and in Wyoming during the summers. During his adolescence his family moved to Los Angeles, where he completed high school in two years to graduate at age sixteen. In 1944 he entered the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena in an accelerated wartime program. He graduated from Caltech with a B.S. in geology in 1947, after two and two-thirds years, and then stayed on to get a master's degree the following year....
