Slater, John Clarke (22 December 1900–25 July 1976), physicist, was born in Oak Park, Illinois, the son of John R. Slater, a journalist, and Katherine Chapin. The family moved to Rochester, New York, when Slater’s father became a professor of English at the University of Rochester in 1905. After graduating from East Rochester High School in 1917, Slater completed a bachelor of science degree in physics at the University of Rochester in 1920.
