Whitney, Mary Watson (11 September 1847–20 January 1921), astronomer, was born in Waltham, Massachusetts, the daughter of Samuel Buttrick Whitney, a real-estate dealer, and Mary Watson Crehore. She graduated from Waltham High School showing a strong mathematical aptitude and attended an academy in her home town for a year. With her family’s support of her excellent intellectual abilities, in 1865 she enrolled in the newly opened Vassar Female College (now Vassar College) in Poughkeepsie, New York. Having received advanced standing, she received her undergraduate degree in astronomy with honors in only three years, in 1868, as part of Vassar’s second graduating class.
