Hitchcock, Edward (24 May 1793–27 February 1864), geologist, was born in Deerfield, Massachusetts, the son of Justin Hitchcock, a poor farmer and hatter, and Mercy Hoyt. He supported himself while attending Deerfield Academy and afterward served as its preceptor from 1815 to 1819. In 1821 Hitchcock married Orra White; she assisted him and illustrated his works. The union yielded six children, of whom two became eminent in science....
