Fleming, Williamina Paton Stevens (15 May 1857–21 May 1911), astronomer, was born in Dundee, Scotland, the daughter of Robert Stevens, the proprietor of a carving and gilding business and also a photographer, and Mary Walker. Williamina was educated in the Dundee public schools, where from age fourteen she was a pupil-teacher. She continued teaching until her marriage to James Orr Fleming, also of Dundee, in 1877. In December 1878 the couple emigrated to Boston, Massachusetts, but the marriage soon failed, and they separated in 1879.
