Moreno, Jacob L. (18 May 1889–14 May 1974), psychiatrist, was born Jakob Levy Moreno in Bucharest, Romania, the son of Nissim Levy Moreno, a Jewish merchant from Bulgaria, then a part of the Ottoman Empire, and Pauline Wolf. He entered the University of Vienna in 1912, and received an M.D. in 1917. He began private practice as a psychiatrist in Vöslau, Austria, about 20 miles (32 kilometers) south of Vienna, where he also served as a public health officer and within a year was appointed superintendent of the nearby Mittendorf State Hospital.
