Taussig, Helen Brooke (24 May 1898–20 May 1986), physician, was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, the daughter of Frank W. Taussig, a noted economist and Harvard University professor, and Edith Guild, one of the first graduates of Radcliffe College. Her mother, who died when Helen was eleven, passed along to her daughter a strong interest in zoology and the natural sciences, as did her paternal grandfather, a St. Louis physician who specialized in the treatment of children with defective vision. As a child Helen had severe reading difficulties; she later said that her father’s help enabled her to overcome this handicap....
