Field, Stephen Johnson (04 November 1816–09 April 1899), associate justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, was born in Haddam, Connecticut, the son of David Dudley Field, Sr., a Congregational minister, and Submit Dickinson. After his family moved to Stockbridge in 1818, Field spent the remainder of his youth in the Berkshire Hills of western Massachusetts. He graduated from Williams College in 1837.
