Gilman, Daniel Coit (06 July 1831–13 October 1908), educator and university president, was born in Norwich, Connecticut, the son of William Charles Gilman, a prosperous nail manufacturer, and Eliza Coit. His father and mother were socially prominent in the community and devoted considerable time to educational and charitable activities. Gilman, after primary school, attended Norwich Academy, an elite school where one of his classmates was Timothy Dwight (1828-1916), a future president of Yale University. When he was fourteen, Gilman’s family moved to New York City....
