Grant, Zilpah Polly (30 May 1794–03 December 1874), educator, was born in South Norfolk, Connecticut, the daughter of Joel Grant and Zilpah Cowles, farmers. The Grants were known for their “Scotch grit and toughness” and their “intellectual grace and strength.” Although her father was killed in a farming accident when Grant was two years old, her mother maintained the family household and farm where Grant lived through her young twenties....
