McCarthy, Joseph (14 November 1908–02 May 1957), U.S. senator, was born Joseph Raymond McCarthy on a dairy farm near Appleton, Wisconsin, the son of Timothy McCarthy and Bridget Tierney, farmers. At age sixteen McCarthy quit school to begin a poultry business on rented land. When a bitter winter killed most of his flock, he returned to high school in the fall of 1929 and crammed four years of work into two semesters. In 1930 he enrolled in Marquette University, a Jesuit institution in Milwaukee....
