Stilwell, Joseph Warren (19 March 1883–12 October 1946), army officer, was the son of Benjamin W. Stilwell and Mary A. Peene. He was born near Palatka, Florida, where his father, a man of many parts, was attempting, unsuccessfully, to start a lumber business. Benjamin Stilwell subsequently moved his family back to his home town of Yonkers, New York, and settled down to become an executive with an electric utilities company. Stilwell was educated in Yonkers schools and graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 1904. Following an assignment (1904–1906) with the Twelfth Infantry on Cebu in the Philippine Islands, where the army was engaged in pacifying rebellious tribes, Stilwell returned to the Military Academy (1906–1910) to teach French and Spanish. In 1910 he married Winifred Smith; they had five children....
