Vandenberg, Arthur H. (22 March 1884–18 April 1951), journalist and U.S. senator, was born Arthur Hendrick Vandenberg in Grand Rapids, Michigan, the son of Alpha Hendrick and Aaron Vandenberg, a successful small-scale harness manufacturer. Young Arthur was obliged to go to work at the age of nine when his father’s business failed during the panic of 1893.
