McDowell, Irvin (15 October 1818–04 May 1885), soldier, was born in Columbus, Ohio, the son of Abram Irvin McDowell and Eliza Selden Lord. He attended the Collège de Troyes in France and in 1834 received an appointment to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. He graduated in 1838, twenty-third in a class of forty-eight.
