Hayes, Rutherford Birchard (04 October 1822–17 January 1893), nineteenth president of the United States, was born in Delaware, Ohio, the posthumous son of Rutherford Hayes, Jr., a farmer and distiller, and Sophia Birchard. Puny at birth, Hayes unexpectedly survived and grew strong, but his mother remained overly protective—especially after his older brother Lorenzo drowned while ice-skating—and would not let him join other boys in rough play. His precocious sister Fanny—with whom Hayes remained unusually close until her death in 1856—was his constant companion....
