Heth, Henry (16 December 1825–27 September 1899), soldier, was born at Blackheath, Chesterfield County, Virginia, the son of John Heth and Margaret L. Pickett. His father was a midshipman in the navy during the War of 1812 and served until 1822, when he resigned his commission, returned to Blackheath, and joined the family businesses—manufacturing, mining coal and iron, and farming. He died in April 1843 and with him his family’s comfortable financial situation. Henry had received an excellent early education and in 1843 won an appointment to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. He was an indifferent student and graduated last of thirty-eight cadets in the class of 1847....
