Stuart, J. E. B. (06 February 1833–12 May 1864), Confederate major general, was born James Ewell Brown Stuart in Patrick County, Virginia, the son of Archibald Stuart, a lawyer and politician, and Elizabeth Letcher Pannill. James attended school in southwest Virginia from an early age, leaving his home in 1845 to study in Wytheville. He spent less than two years at Emory and Henry College before securing an appointment to the U.S. Military Academy in 1850. During his stay at West Point, Stuart associated for the first time with military men, many of whom were destined to play significant roles in his Civil War career.
