McClelland, Robert (01 August 1807–30 August 1880), politician and secretary of the interior, was born in Greencastle, Pennsylvania, the son of John McClellan [ sic], a physician, and Eleanor McCulloh. He taught school before graduating from Dickinson College in 1829 and two years later was admitted to the bar in Chambersburg. He practiced law in Pittsburgh before emigrating to Monroe, Michigan, in 1833. He was a member of the convention that drafted Michigan’s first state constitution in 1835, serving on the Judiciary Committee. Two years later he married Sarah E. Sabine of Williamstown, Massachusetts....
