Hicks, Thomas Holliday (02 September 1798–13 February 1865), governor of Maryland and U.S. senator, was born in Dorchester County, Maryland, where his parents Henry Hicks and Mary Sewell were prosperous Eastern Shore farmers. Hicks attended a district school and was briefly a merchant, a shipowner, and a slaveholding farmer before establishing his career in politics. He married three times—to Anne Thompson, Leah Raleigh, and Mary Wilcox....
