Ewell, Richard Stoddert (08 February 1817–25 January 1872), Confederate general, was born in Georgetown, District of Columbia, the son of Thomas Ewell, a physician, and Elizabeth Stoddert. When Ewell was just ten years old his father died, leaving the family in poverty. Ewell helped operate the family farm near Gainesville, Virginia, until the age of nineteen, when he attended the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York.
